Why Your Brand Does Not Show Up in ChatGPT
Quick answer
The usual reasons why your brand does not show up in ChatGPT are access, identity and evidence. ChatGPT cannot reach your pages, cannot tell what your product is, finds too few independent sites or reviews that mention you, or never sees you tied to your category. Sometimes you are testing prompts buyers do not type, or seeing normal variance between runs. Each cause has a test you can run yourself.

Key takeaways
- Check crawler access first, because a site that blocks OAI-SearchBot is left out of every ChatGPT search answer.
- Since July 2025 Cloudflare has asked every new domain at sign-up whether to allow AI crawlers, with blocking as the default, so a recent launch can be blocked by a setting nobody on the marketing team saw.
- If ChatGPT names you for brand prompts but not for category prompts, the gap is third-party mentions and category language, not your website.
- One missing answer proves nothing, since SparkToro found less than a 1 in 100 chance that ChatGPT repeats the same brand list.
- Fix in order of speed: access and indexing take days, entity clarity takes weeks, mentions and reviews take months.
A brand goes missing from ChatGPT for one of seven reasons, and each can be tested with a browser, your robots.txt file and a handful of prompts. If you're a founder and a prospect just told you ChatGPT recommended a rival, run these tests before you buy a tracking tool or hire anyone. Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode and Copilot fail for overlapping but different reasons, so passing every test here does not guarantee you appear in those. How ChatGPT builds its shortlist in the first place is explained in how ChatGPT decides which software products to recommend.
Why your brand does not show up in ChatGPT, cause by cause
The seven causes fall into three groups: ChatGPT cannot reach you, it cannot tell who you are, or the wider web does not connect you to the buyer's question. Run the tests in the order of the table, because the early causes block everything after them.
| Cause | What you see | How to test it | First fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| Search crawler blocked | Your site is never cited, even for prompts about your own brand | Read robots.txt for OAI-SearchBot rules and check your CDN's AI bot settings | Allow OAI-SearchBot and wait about 24 hours |
| Pages not indexed where ChatGPT searches | Key pages missing from Bing results | Search site:yourdomain.com on Bing and inspect missing URLs in Bing Webmaster Tools | Submit a sitemap and fix crawl errors |
| Unclear entity | ChatGPT confuses you with another company or describes the wrong product | Ask "What is [brand] and who is it for" in a Temporary Chat with search on | One name and one category sentence on every page and profile |
| Too few third-party mentions | Rivals are cited from roundups that do not include you | Open the sources ChatGPT cites for five shortlist prompts | Pitch the authors of the lists already cited |
| No reviews | Review sites are cited with competitors' profiles | Compare your review count with the three rivals ChatGPT names most | Ask active customers for reviews on the sites your category uses |
| Weak category association | You appear for brand prompts and never for "best tool for" prompts | Run the same need as a brand prompt and as a category prompt | Use the buyer's words for your category everywhere |
| Prompt mismatch or variance | You appear in some runs and not others, or only for your own phrasing | Run each buyer prompt ten times in fresh sessions | Report a presence rate, not one answer |
Is ChatGPT blocked from crawling your site?
Check this first, because it overrides everything else. OpenAI's crawler documentation says sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, and that it can take about 24 hours after a robots.txt change for its systems to adjust. OpenAI's publishers FAQ puts it the other way round: any public website can appear in ChatGPT search, provided OAI-SearchBot is not blocked.
The block is often invisible to the team. Cloudflare announced in July 2025 that every new domain would be asked at sign-up whether to allow AI crawlers, with blocking as the default. A startup that launched on Cloudflare after that date may be blocking AI crawlers, possibly including OAI-SearchBot, because of a choice made at sign-up that nobody on the marketing team saw. Look at the bot settings in your CDN dashboard as well as robots.txt. A minimal rule that lets OpenAI's search crawler in while keeping training separate looks like this.
User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /
# Training is a separate decision
User-agent: GPTBot
Disallow: / Blocking GPTBot only keeps content out of training; it does not remove you from search answers. The trade-offs for every AI crawler are in should you allow GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot to crawl your site.

Schedule a Free ConsultationCan ChatGPT find your pages when it searches?
ChatGPT search sends rewritten queries to partner search providers, and the partner privacy policy OpenAI's search help page links is Microsoft's. Seer Interactive found in February 2025 that 87% of ChatGPT search citations in its sample matched Bing's top organic results. A product page missing from Bing is very hard for ChatGPT search to cite.
Test it by searching site:yourdomain.com on Bing, then searching your three most important product phrases. If pricing, use-case or comparison pages are missing, that is the gap. Whether registering with Bing Webmaster Tools closes it is answered in does adding your site to Bing Webmaster Tools get you into ChatGPT.
Does ChatGPT know what your product is?
An unclear entity is the likeliest cause when your product has a generic or reused name. If your product shares its name with a common word, an older company or another app, ChatGPT may merge them or pick the better-known one. Bing's Webmaster Guidelines say clear and consistent naming of people, organizations and products improves grounding visibility and citation accuracy, and ChatGPT search draws on Bing heavily.
Test it with a brand prompt in a Temporary Chat, once asking it to answer without searching the web, and once with Search selected from the tools menu. Wrong or vague answers mean the fix starts with one category sentence repeated across your homepage, profiles and listings. Correcting a description ChatGPT already has wrong is its own job, covered in how to fix what ChatGPT says about your company.
Do enough other sites mention your brand?
For shortlist prompts, ChatGPT relies mostly on what other sites say. In Ahrefs' December 2025 study of 26,283 source URLs behind ChatGPT answers about software, products and agencies, "best X" blog lists made up 43.8% of cited page types. A brand absent from those lists is absent from the evidence ChatGPT reads.
That study measured Google AI Overviews, not ChatGPT, and we have not seen an equivalent study for ChatGPT. It is still the best public evidence that mentions matter more than links for AI answers. Test this cause by running five shortlist prompts with search on, listing every cited domain and marking which ones mention you. The pages that name three rivals and not you are your outreach list, and the workflow is in how to get your AI tool into the best-of lists AI engines cite.
Do you have reviews where AI engines look?
No reviews means one less source type that can vouch for you, and the one buyers say makes them trust an AI answer most. In G2's survey of 1,076 B2B software buyers, published in April 2026, citations from software review sites stood out as the top signal that made buyers trust an AI answer. Test it by comparing your review count and recency with the three rivals ChatGPT names most often.
We have not seen reliable data on a minimum number of reviews that tips ChatGPT into recommending a product, so be wary of anyone who quotes one. What matters more is that reviews describe the use case in buyer language, because that text is what search retrieves. How review sites like G2 influence AI recommendations covers building a profile from zero.
Does the web connect you to the category buyers ask about?
If ChatGPT describes you correctly when asked by name but never includes you in "best tool for" answers, the web does not connect you to the category. This happens when a startup invents its own label, such as "agentic revenue orchestration", while buyers ask for an "AI sales assistant". ChatGPT matches the buyer's words to the products the web files under them.
Test it by writing the same need two ways, "Is [brand] good for [job]" and "What's the best tool for [job]", and comparing the answers. Fixing it means adopting the buyer's category words on your pages and in your pitches to list authors, which is the subject of getting found when buyers do not search for your category name.
Are you testing the prompts buyers type, enough times?
Many brands that think they are missing are testing the wrong prompts, or testing each one once. SparkToro and Gumshoe's January 2026 research found less than a 1 in 100 chance that ChatGPT would return the same list of brands twice. Why the lists move, and why presence across runs is still measurable, is explained in how ChatGPT decides which software products to recommend.
So take ten prompts from the language of sales calls and demo forms, run each one ten times in fresh Temporary Chats, and count the share of runs that name you. Zero out of a hundred is a real absence. Thirty out of a hundred is a presence problem, not an invisibility problem. The method for doing this monthly is in how to track brand mentions in ChatGPT.
Which cause should you fix first?
Fix in order of speed and dependency: access, then indexing, then entity, then mentions and reviews. Each later fix is wasted if an earlier one is broken.
Fix order, fastest first
- Crawler access, in daysAllow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt and your CDN. OpenAI says changes take about 24 hours to register.
- Indexing, in days to weeksGet product, pricing, use-case and comparison pages into Bing, because those are the pages a buyer's prompt should retrieve.
- Entity clarity, in weeksPublish one category sentence everywhere and remove the old taglines that contradict it.
- Mentions and reviews, in monthsEarn places in the lists ChatGPT already cites and collect reviews in buyer language. This is the slowest step and the one that moves category prompts.
SISTRIX's May 2026 study of AI citation drift found ChatGPT search replaced 74% of its cited sources each week, so new placements can surface fast and fade fast. When the checklist shows the problem is mentions and category association rather than access, that is the slow, outreach-heavy work a ChatGPT SEO agency takes on, though a marketer with a few spare hours a week can start it.
Frequently asked questions
How do I check whether ChatGPT knows my brand?
Open a Temporary Chat so memory and past conversations do not skew the answer, and ask "What is [brand] and who is it for" once asking it to answer without searching the web, and once with Search selected from the tools menu. The first shows what the model learned in training; the second shows what ChatGPT finds on the web today. A wrong or vague description in either points to an unclear entity rather than a ranking problem.
Does blocking GPTBot remove my brand from ChatGPT?
Not from search answers. OpenAI documents GPTBot as its training crawler and OAI-SearchBot as the crawler that surfaces sites in ChatGPT search. Blocking GPTBot keeps future content out of model training, while blocking OAI-SearchBot keeps your pages out of search answers. You can allow OAI-SearchBot and block GPTBot, which keeps search visibility while opting out of training.
Why does ChatGPT mention my brand for some people and not others?
Answers are generated fresh each time, and ChatGPT can use memory and approximate location when it rewrites search queries. SparkToro and Gumshoe found less than a 1 in 100 chance of ChatGPT returning the same brand list twice. A colleague seeing you and a prospect not seeing you can both be normal, so measure the share of repeated runs that name you.
How long after fixing the cause will my brand appear in ChatGPT?
It depends on the cause. A robots.txt fix registers with OpenAI in about 24 hours, and search answers change quickly, since SISTRIX measured 74% weekly turnover in ChatGPT's cited sources. Mentions and reviews take months to earn. Answers ChatGPT gives without searching change only when a newer model is trained, and OpenAI does not publish that schedule.
