Why Google AI Overviews skips pages that rank

Google AI Overviews builds its summary from passages, not whole pages, and the supporting links aren't always the top results for the query. Google says both Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode may split a question into subtopics and run several searches at once, a technique it calls query fan-out. A page that ranks for the head term but buries its answer, or never covers the sub-questions, gets passed over.

We rank, but the AI overview answers first

Searchers get what they need from the summary and scroll past your result. Your position holds while click-through on that query falls.

The summary cites a competitor's comparison page

When someone searches for tools like yours, the supporting links are often a rival's versus page or a third-party roundup. Their framing becomes the answer Google gives.

Google AI Mode never mentions us at all

Google AI Mode runs a conversation, not a results page, and it draws on searches you probably don't track. If no page of yours answers the sub-questions it asks, you're not in the conversation.

What our AI Overviews optimization services cover

Two jobs. First, make your best pages the easiest passages for Google to quote, for the head query and the sub-questions behind it. Second, protect the clicks that matter by giving searchers something the summary can't, so a citation turns into visits and signups.

01

Queries mapped to where a summary appears

We find which of your target queries trigger Google AI Overviews, which sources each summary cites, and where you rank without being cited.

02

Answer passages Google can lift intact

We rewrite key sections so each heading is followed by a self-contained answer, with the definition, the figure or the steps in its opening sentences.

03

Sub-question coverage for query fan-out

We list the sub-questions behind each core query, such as pricing, alternatives, integrations and use cases, and make sure one of your pages answers each clearly.

04

Snippet eligibility checked page by page

Google requires a page to be indexed and snippet-eligible to appear as a supporting link. We find noindex, nosnippet, max-snippet and rendering issues that rule pages out.

05

Clicks the summary can't replace

We add what a summary can't hand over, such as interactive demos, templates, calculators and worked examples, so searchers who see you cited still have a reason to visit.

06

Position and clicks measured apart

Search Console folds these clicks into the web report, so we track summary presence separately and watch click-through per query against the baseline.

Questions buyers ask us

Can you get us into Google AI Overviews for a specific query?

We can make your page the strongest candidate, but nobody controls what Google shows. Google decides when a summary appears, and its sources can change between searches. What we commit to is a measured process: target queries mapped, passages rebuilt, sub-questions covered, and citations and clicks read against a baseline every month.

Do Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode need different work?

Mostly the same work with a different emphasis. Google AI Overviews rewards a clear answer to the query on the results page. Google AI Mode is conversational and, by Google's description, splits questions into many sub-searches, so coverage of follow-up topics matters more there. We plan for both together, because the pages overlap.

How long until we see a change?

Google has to recrawl and reprocess a page before a rewrite can affect a summary, and that runs on Google's schedule. Rewrites to pages that already rank usually move before new pages do. Sub-question coverage takes longer, because those pages must earn rankings first. We read results at day 90 against the baseline and say plainly what moved.

Will being cited bring clicks or just visibility?

Both happen, and we measure them separately. A citation puts your brand inside the answer, and some searchers click the source to check it. To raise that share, we give pages something the summary can't hand over, like a demo, a template or a tool. If a query's clicks are gone for good, we tell you and shift the effort.

Should we use nosnippet to stop Google summarizing us?

Usually not. Google's snippet controls do keep content out of Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode, but they also strip your normal snippets, which tends to cost more clicks than it saves. A narrower option is data-nosnippet on specific sections. We weigh the trade-off query by query before changing anything.

How do you measure it if Search Console doesn't separate it?

We combine three sources. Search Console shows clicks and click-through per query, which tells us when a summary is taking clicks. Third-party rank trackers record when a summary appears and who it cites. And we check the summaries for your priority queries ourselves. All of it is read against the baseline recorded before work starts.

Does this work carry over beyond Google?

Yes. Clear passages, snippet-eligible pages and wide sub-topic coverage are what every engine reads, so the same work carries across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode and Copilot. We also work on Bing, because ChatGPT search and Copilot draw on Bing's index.

What do AI Overviews optimization services cost?

Quoted after a free consultation. Scope depends on how many of your priority queries show a summary today and how many pages need rewriting or building. We send a plan and a quote together, and work starts once you approve both. You won't find a price on this page, because we price the plan, not a package.

What results have you had in Google?

For Viggle AI, keywords ranking in Google's top three rose 362%, and pages cited in AI answers grew from 4 to 279. Wisemonk's pages cited in AI answers went from 70 to 299. Those citation figures cover AI answers broadly, so we don't present them as Google AI Overviews numbers on their own.
