Perplexity citations

Perplexity SEO Agency for Becoming a Cited Source

Perplexity searches the web for almost every question and shows its sources as numbered links, so the prize is being one of those links. SearchAxe is the Perplexity SEO agency for funded AI startups, seed to Series B, working on your pages and the third-party sources that back them up. HeyOz went from no AI citations to 91.

Why Perplexity cites a Reddit thread instead of your product page

Perplexity answers from what it finds on the web at that moment, and it shows every source it used. In the prompts we test, the pages it picks tend to answer the exact question near the top, carry a recent date and agree with what other sources say. Perplexity hasn't published its ranking rules, so treat that as a pattern, not a law. A product page written as a pitch rarely fits it.

Perplexity links to roundups that leave us out

The numbered sources under a best-tools answer are often lists someone else wrote. If you aren't on those lists, you aren't in the answer, however good your own page is.

Our page is cited, but the summary is wrong

Perplexity quotes the sentence it can lift most easily, which may be an old pricing line or a feature you retired. Being cited with the wrong facts can cost you more than not being cited.

We can't tell if Perplexity sends real buyers

Visits arrive as perplexity.ai referrals, usually few enough to ignore. Nobody checks what those visitors do once they land, so nobody knows if the channel is worth growing.

How a Perplexity SEO agency earns the source link

Perplexity favours pages it can quote and claims it can check against other sources. So the work has two halves, your own pages and the sources that corroborate them, plus the crawler and freshness basics that decide whether Perplexity finds you at all.

01

Answer-first passages under every key heading

We restructure product, comparison and pricing pages so the first two sentences under each heading answer one buyer question with a specific claim worth quoting.

02

Update dates that reflect real changes

We refresh the facts on pages that go stale and show an honest updated date, because on fast-moving questions the newer page tends to win the citation in our tests.

03

Corroboration from domains Perplexity already cites

We log the domains Perplexity links for your category prompts, from review sites to forums and roundups, and earn accurate mentions on the ones that recur.

04

PerplexityBot able to reach every page

Perplexity documents PerplexityBot for indexing and Perplexity-User for fetches a person triggers. We check robots.txt, firewall and CDN rules so neither is blocked by accident.

05

Follow-up questions covered, not only the first

Perplexity suggests related questions under each answer. We map the related questions that appear under your category answers, such as pricing, integrations or alternatives, and make sure a page of yours answers each.

06

Citation position tracked, not just presence

We record which numbered source you are, how many answers cite you and what text was quoted, then tie perplexity.ai referrals to signups against the baseline.

  • Claude
  • Gemini
  • Google AI Overviews

Questions buyers ask us

How does Perplexity choose which sources to cite?

Perplexity hasn't published its ranking rules. Across the prompts we run, it searches live, prefers pages that answer the question in plain sentences near the top, leans toward recently updated pages on fast-moving topics, and often cites forums, reviews and roundups beside vendor pages. We plan around those patterns and recheck them, because the product changes often.

How long until Perplexity cites us?

Because Perplexity searches live, a page can be cited soon after it's crawled, which usually makes it quicker to move than answers built on training data. The slow part is everything around the page: earning mentions on sites it already trusts and keeping facts fresh on a schedule. We set the baseline in month one and read results at day 90.

Is Perplexity worth the effort if the traffic is small?

Often, because people clicking a numbered source are mid-research and comparing tools. Volume is usually lower than Google, so we judge the channel on signups and demos from perplexity.ai referrals, not on visits. If your buyers don't use it, we'll say so on the free consultation and put the effort somewhere that pays.

Does Perplexity work carry over to the other engines?

Partly. Quotable pages, accurate third-party mentions and open crawler access are what every engine reads, so that groundwork helps across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode and Copilot. The sources each engine cites differ, so a Perplexity win doesn't guarantee one elsewhere. Perplexity is simply the easiest place to watch the work land, because it shows exactly which sources it used.

Does Perplexity cite the same sources as other engines?

Often not. In our prompt tests, Perplexity's numbered sources overlap only partly with what other engines cite for the same question, and it leans harder on recent pages and community threads. That's why we log its sources separately instead of assuming a win elsewhere carries over. The shared basics, quotable pages and accurate third-party mentions, still help everywhere.

Our page is cited with the wrong details. What now?

Find the sentence Perplexity is lifting, then fix it at the source. Usually it's an old pricing line, a retired feature or a third-party page that copied your old copy. We update your page, ask the third party to correct theirs, and rerun the prompt until the summary matches what you sell today.

Do you need access to our site?

For the page work, yes, or a developer on your side who can ship changes quickly. We also need read access to your analytics and Google Search Console, plus Bing Webmaster Tools if you use it, to set the baseline. Nothing goes live without your sign-off, and you keep every page we write.

Can we buy Perplexity work on its own?

Rarely on its own. The same pages and mentions feed Google, Bing and the other engines, so the plan and the quote usually cover them as a whole. It's quoted after a free consultation, you get the plan and the quote together, and work starts once both are approved.

Which results can you point to?

Wisemonk's citations across AI answer engines rose 414%, with pages cited going from 70 to 299. HeyOz went from no AI citations to 91 and is cited by 6 of 7 major AI answer engines. Both were measured against a baseline set before the work began, and both are published as full case studies.
