How to Rank in Google AI Overviews
Quick answer
How to rank in Google AI Overviews is a question of eligibility, query choice and passage structure. The page must be indexed, eligible for a snippet and not excluded in Search Console's Search generative AI control. Target the question-style queries that trigger most overviews, answer each sub-question in the first sentences of its own section, and earn mentions on other sites. A page-one ranking helps but no longer guarantees a citation.

Key takeaways
- Google says a page must be indexed, eligible for a snippet and on a site included in Search Console's Search generative AI control, with no special markup, file or writing style.
- In Ahrefs' study of 146 million SERPs, AI Overviews appeared on 57.9% of question queries but on only 4.3% of commercial keywords.
- Only 38% of pages cited in AI Overviews ranked in the top 10 for the same query in Ahrefs' March 2026 data, which Ahrefs links to Google citing pages that rank for related sub-queries.
- Brand mentions on other sites correlated more strongly with AI Overview visibility (0.664) than backlinks did (0.218) in Ahrefs' study of 75,000 brands.
- AI Overviews change roughly every two days, so judge citations over weeks of data, not from one screenshot.
If you run growth at a seed to Series B SaaS or AI startup and Google now shows an AI-generated answer above the results for the questions your buyers type, this guide is for you. Ranking in Google AI Overviews means being one of the supporting links Google shows inside that answer. You get there by being an indexed page Google already trusts, answering the exact sub-questions the overview needs, and being talked about on other sites. Google documents only the first of those, eligibility, so the rest of this guide leans on published studies and on the checklist we work through.
How to rank in Google AI Overviews starts with Google's eligibility rules
You rank in Google AI Overviews by meeting Google's normal Search requirements and then making your page the easiest source for one part of the answer. Google's AI features documentation says that to be shown as a supporting link, a page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet, and that there are no additional requirements or special optimizations. Everything else in this guide is about being chosen once you are eligible.
Google's guide to optimizing for generative AI features, last updated in July 2026, adds that these features are rooted in its core ranking and quality systems. It says llms.txt files are ignored by Search, that there is no special schema.org markup to add, and that you do not need to break content into tiny pieces. That rules out most of the shortcuts sold for AI Overviews. What is left is the work that also ranks pages in Google and Bing: crawlable pages, clear answers, original information and a brand other sites talk about.
Which queries trigger AI Overviews?
AI Overviews mostly trigger on long, informational, question-style queries and rarely on commercial or transactional ones. In Ahrefs' November 2025 study of 146 million desktop SERPs, they appeared on 57.9% of question queries and 46.4% of queries with seven or more words, but on only 4.3% of commercial and 2.1% of transactional keywords. Navigational queries almost never get one.
Pew Research Center saw the same pattern in real browsing. In its July 2025 analysis of 68,879 Google searches made by 900 US adults in March 2025, 18% produced an AI summary. That rose to 60% for searches starting with who, what, when or why, and to 53% for searches of ten words or more. Only 8% of one or two word searches produced one.
For a software company, that means the education layer of your funnel is exposed and the buying layer mostly is not. Ahrefs found AI Overviews on 28.6% of Computers and Electronics keywords and 30.3% of Internet and Telecom keywords, both above the 20.5% baseline. The table maps Ahrefs' trigger rates to the kinds of queries a SaaS buyer types. The example queries are illustrations, not Ahrefs data.
| Query type | Share with an AI Overview | Illustrative SaaS query | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Question queries | 57.9% | “how do I transcribe a Zoom call automatically” | Answer it in the first two sentences of a dedicated section |
| Seven or more words | 46.4% | “best way to turn a webinar into short clips for LinkedIn” | Cover the task end to end, with numbered steps |
| Non-branded | 24.9% | “ai meeting notes software” | State the category, use cases and limits in plain words |
| Branded | 13.1% | “[your product] pricing” | Keep pricing, plans and limits current on your own pages |
| Commercial | 4.3% | “[competitor] alternatives” | Rank the page in Google and Bing, since overviews rarely appear |
| Transactional | 2.1% | “[your product] free trial” | Classic SEO and a fast path to signup |

No, but it helps. Only 37.9% of AI Overview citations ranked in the top 10 for the same query in Ahrefs' March 2026 data, against about 76% in its July 2025 study, so a page-one ranking is now one route in, not the entry ticket.
Ahrefs' explanation is query fan-out. Google says AI Overviews may issue multiple related searches across subtopics to build one response, so a page that ranks for a sub-question can be cited for a query it never ranked for. Ahrefs suggests fan-out started to play a bigger role after AI Overviews moved to a newer model in January 2026.
In practice, keep doing the ranking work in Google and Bing, but stop judging success only on the head term. Map the sub-questions an overview needs and make sure a section of yours answers each one. The mechanics are in our piece on how Google AI Overviews choose which sources to cite, and the cross-engine view is in why ranking first on Google does not guarantee AI citations.
How should a page be written so AI Overviews can quote it?
Put a direct answer to each question in the first one or two sentences under a heading that matches the question, then add the detail. Pew found the median AI summary was 67 words long and that 88% of summaries cited three or more sources, so Google is usually stitching a short answer together from several pages. Your job is to own one of those pieces cleanly.
Google is careful to say you do not need a special writing style, and that its systems can find the relevant part of a page that covers several topics. That is consistent with answer-first writing, not a contradiction. Answer-first sections suit a featured snippet, a skimming buyer and Google's passage ranking system, which identifies individual sections of a page. What fails is the SaaS habit of opening a page with a slogan and reaching the substance three scrolls down.
Cover the sub-questions, not just the head term
Because of fan-out, one overview may draw on searches for a definition, a how-to, a comparison and a limitation. A page that answers only the head term competes for one slot. List the follow-up questions buyers ask on sales calls and in support tickets, and answer each in its own section. Do not spin up a thin page for every variation: Google's guide says creating content for every fan-out query mainly to manipulate AI responses violates its scaled content abuse policy.
Add video where the query is a how-to
Ahrefs' March 2026 data shows YouTube is the most cited domain in AI Overviews, and 18.2% of cited pages that did not rank in the top 100 were YouTube URLs. For task queries, a short product walkthrough on YouTube with a plain title and description gives Google a second asset to cite. Google's own guidance also recommends supporting text with high-quality images and video.
Which entity signals help a brand appear in AI Overviews?
Mentions of your brand on other sites matter more than links. In Ahrefs' May 2025 study of 75,000 brands, branded web mentions had the strongest correlation with AI Overview brand visibility at 0.664, ahead of branded anchors at 0.527 and branded search volume at 0.392. Backlinks came in at 0.218 and Domain Rating at 0.326.
The gap at the top is large. Brands in the top quartile for web mentions averaged 169 AI Overview mentions, against 14 for the next quartile, and 26% of the brands studied had none at all. These are correlations, and Ahrefs says so. They point the same way as Google's warning that seeking inauthentic mentions is not as helpful as it might seem, so earn real coverage in reviews, comparisons, communities and press instead of buying placements.
On your own site, make the entity unambiguous. Use the same product name, category and one-line description on the homepage, product pages, docs and Organization structured data. Google's May 2025 guidance on AI experiences asks that structured data match the visible content. It is not a ranking switch, but it removes doubt about what the product is. Our guide to schema markup that helps AI search engines understand your product covers which types to use.
Does freshness help you rank in AI Overviews?
Less than most guides claim. Ahrefs' July 2025 study of 17 million citations found that the top three AI Overview citations averaged over 1,432 days since publication, close to Google's organic results, and that AI Overviews cited content 16 days older than organic results on average. ChatGPT, by contrast, showed the strongest preference for newer pages.
So do not change dates or republish untouched posts. Update a page when its facts change: pricing, plan limits, integrations, model versions and anything with a year in it. A stale fact on your own product page is the kind of detail an overview repeats about you, and it is the cheapest thing on this list to fix.
Overviews also churn. Across 43,000 keywords tracked for a month, Ahrefs saw overview content change every 2.15 days on average, with 45.5% of cited sources replaced between one check and the next. A citation you see today is a sample, not a position.
What is the checklist for ranking in Google AI Overviews?
Work through these in order. The first three decide whether Google can cite you at all, including the Search generative AI control that Search Console rolled out to all sites on August 31, 2026. The rest decide whether Google chooses to.
| Check | Why it matters | How to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Googlebot can crawl and index the page | Only indexed, snippet-eligible pages can be supporting links | URL Inspection in Search Console shows the page as indexed |
| No nosnippet or tight max-snippet rules | Google says more restrictive preview controls limit how content appears in AI features | Check robots meta tags and any data-nosnippet spans |
| Site included in the Search generative AI control | An excluded site gets no links or impressions in AI Overviews | Settings, then Search generative AI, in Search Console |
| Question and long-tail queries targeted | 57.9% of question queries trigger an overview | Filter Search Console queries containing how, what, why and best |
| Direct answer in the first two sentences of each section | Overviews stitch short answers from several sources | Read only the first sentence under each heading and check it answers the heading |
| Sub-questions covered in their own sections | Fan-out searches related subtopics | Match each follow-up from sales calls to a section or URL |
| One product name and description everywhere | Removes doubt about what the entity is | Compare homepage, docs, Organization schema and review profiles |
| Earned mentions on third-party sites | Web mentions correlated 0.664 with AI Overview brand visibility | Log new reviews, roundups and threads that name you each month |
| Video for how-to queries | YouTube is the most cited domain in AI Overviews | Search the query and note whether videos are cited |
| Facts updated when they change | Overviews repeat what your pages say | Review pricing, limits and integration pages every quarter |
| Citations tracked over weeks | Overview content changes every 2.15 days on average | Generative AI performance report in Search Console |
How do you know whether your pages appear in AI Overviews?
Use Search Console's generative AI performance report. Google introduced it in June 2026 and rolled it out to all sites on August 31, 2026. It shows how often URLs from your site appeared in AI Overviews and AI Mode, by page, country, device and date. It reports impressions, not clicks.
Clicks from overviews sit inside the normal Performance report under the Web search type. Google's documentation on impressions and position says an AI Overview occupies a single position and every link inside it is assigned that same position. A page cited in an overview at the top of the results can therefore report a strong average position even when its blue link sits lower, so read position on AI-heavy queries with care.
For the click side, compare impressions and clicks on question queries before and after an overview appeared, which we cover in what to do when AI Overviews take your clicks. Bing reports citations separately: its AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools covers Copilot and Bing's AI summaries, not Google.
When is chasing AI Overviews the wrong priority?
When your pipeline comes from queries that rarely trigger them. With overviews on 4.3% of commercial and 2.1% of transactional keywords in Ahrefs' data, a seed-stage startup with no comparison, integration or use-case pages should build those first and rank them in Google and Bing. Overviews reward the education layer above them, and that layer only pays off once the buying pages exist.
AI Overviews are also one answer surface among several. The same buyer may ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode and Copilot. Even inside Google, Ahrefs found only 13.7% citation overlap between AI Overviews and AI Mode for the same queries, which we unpack in how to rank in Google AI Mode. If Google's AI answers are where your category research happens, the Google AI Overviews and AI Mode optimization page sets out the work involved for both surfaces.
Frequently asked questions
Can you pay to appear in Google AI Overviews?
No. Supporting links in AI Overviews are organic. Google's documentation says there are no additional requirements beyond being indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, and the site must not be excluded in Search Console's Search generative AI control. Ahrefs also found branded ad traffic correlated only weakly, at 0.216, with brand visibility in AI Overviews, so paid search spend does not buy you a citation.
Does llms.txt or special schema help you rank in AI Overviews?
No. Google's July 2026 guide to generative AI features says Search ignores llms.txt and similar AI text files, so they neither help nor harm visibility. It also says structured data is not required and there is no special schema.org markup for AI features. Structured data that matches the visible page still helps Google understand your product, but it does not earn citations on its own.
How long does it take to appear in AI Overviews?
Google publishes no timeline. A page first has to be crawled and indexed, then it competes every time the overview regenerates, which Ahrefs measured at about every 2.15 days. The fastest route is usually rewriting an indexed page that already ranks for related queries, because Google already trusts it. New pages on a young domain take longer, just as they do in organic results on Google and Bing.
Why does an AI Overview cite my competitor and not me?
Usually because the competitor's page answers the specific sub-question more directly, ranks for one of the related searches Google runs, or is mentioned on more third-party sites. Check what the cited passage says, then compare your equivalent section. Remember that overviews change often: Ahrefs found 45.5% of cited sources were new from one observation to the next, so check the same query several times before drawing conclusions.
Can I stop Google using my site in AI Overviews?
Yes. Search Console's Search generative AI control lets you exclude a site from AI Overviews, AI Mode and AI features in Discover. Google says excluded content will not appear or be linked in those features, while content from other sites still appears and may look similar to yours. Google also says the control does not affect ranking elsewhere in Search. For most SaaS companies, excluding means losing visibility without getting the click back.
