How to Rank in Google AI Mode and How It Differs From AI Overviews
Quick answer
How to rank in Google AI Mode starts with the same eligibility as Google Search, an indexed page that can show a snippet. From there, cover the comparison and multi-part questions Google built AI Mode for, publish reference-style pages, and get named on third-party sources, because AI Mode splits each question into many sub-searches. It cited the same URLs as AI Overviews only 13.7% of the time in Ahrefs' study, so track it separately.

Key takeaways
- AI Mode uses the same eligibility rules as AI Overviews: indexed and snippet-eligible, with no special markup or file.
- AI Mode breaks a question into subtopics and runs many searches at once, which favours pages that answer comparisons and follow-up questions.
- Ahrefs found AI Mode and AI Overviews cited the same URLs only 13.7% of the time, even though their answers were 86% semantically similar.
- AI Mode answers were about 4x longer and named 3.3 brands or people on average against 1.3 in AI Overviews, so shortlist-style queries matter more.
- Semrush measured 92% to 94% of AI Mode sessions as zero-click in mid-2025, so being named in the answer counts as much as the link.
If you run marketing at a SaaS or AI startup and buyers are starting to research your category in Google AI Mode, this is how it works and what to change. AI Mode is a conversational search mode that answers with a long AI response, takes follow-up questions and links to sources. It builds each answer from many sub-searches and cites a largely different set of pages from AI Overviews, so ranking in it means covering the comparisons and follow-ups buyers ask, not just the head term.
What is Google AI Mode and how does it build an answer?
AI Mode answers by planning, searching many times, and then writing. Google's I/O 2025 announcement says it breaks a question into subtopics and issues a multitude of queries simultaneously, and that Deep Search, its research option, can issue hundreds of searches for one report. Google's March 2025 launch post adds that it draws on the Knowledge Graph, real-time information and shopping data for billions of products, not only web pages.
Google's AI features documentation positions AI Mode for queries where further exploration, reasoning or complex comparisons are needed. That is the important line for software companies. The questions that send buyers into AI Mode look like “which call recorder works with HubSpot and is cheapest for a five-person team”, not “call recorder”.
Usage is large and contested. At Google I/O 2026 in May, Google said AI Mode had passed 1 billion monthly users, that AI Mode queries had more than doubled every quarter since launch, and that it was joining AI Overviews and AI Mode so people can move from an overview straight into a follow-up in AI Mode. Similarweb's July 2026 statistics describe AI Mode as growing fast early, then levelling off and starting to soften. Google counts its own users and Similarweb measures a panel, so both can hold. Treat usage claims from every side with care.
How does AI Mode differ from AI Overviews?
AI Overviews appear automatically on a normal results page and give a short answer, while AI Mode is a destination for longer, multi-step questions with follow-ups. The two share eligibility rules and the fan-out technique, but they produce different answers, cite different pages and send very different amounts of traffic. The table compares them on what affects a SaaS team.
| Dimension | AI Overviews | AI Mode | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where it appears | Above the normal results for some queries | Its own mode, reached from a tab, the search box or a follow-up to an overview | Google I/O 2025 and I/O 2026 announcements |
| Best suited to | Getting the gist of a topic quickly | Exploration, reasoning and complex comparisons | Google AI features documentation |
| Answer length | Short | About 4x longer | Ahrefs, December 2025 |
| Brands or people named | 1.3 per answer on average | 3.3 per answer on average | Ahrefs, December 2025 |
| Answers with no cited source | 11% | 3% | Ahrefs, December 2025 |
| Wikipedia's presence in citations (Ahrefs wording) | 18.1% | 28.9% | Ahrefs, December 2025 |
| Average query length | Not measured (traditional Google queries averaged 4.0 words) | 7.22 words | Semrush, July 2025 |
| Zero-click rate | About 43% of searches with an overview | 92% to 94% of sessions | Semrush, July 2025, from separate studies |
| Follow-up questions | Hands follow-ups to AI Mode since May 2026 | Each follow-up counts as a new query in Search Console | Google I/O 2026; Search Console Help |

Schedule a Free ConsultationDo AI Mode and AI Overviews cite the same sources?
Mostly not. Ahrefs' December 2025 study of September 2025 US data compared both answers for 540,000 queries and found they cited the same URLs only 13.7% of the time, rising to 16.3% when only the top three citations were compared. The answers still agreed on meaning: average semantic similarity was 86%, and they opened with the same sentence only 2.51% of the time.
The source mix leans differently. YouTube was the top cited domain in AI Overviews, Wikipedia appeared in 28.9% of AI Mode citations against 18.1% in AI Overviews, and Quora was cited 3.5x more in AI Mode. AI Overviews cited videos and core pages such as homepages nearly twice as often as AI Mode, while both preferred articles overall. Ahrefs notes one caveat: it compared single generations, and AI Overview citations change often between runs, so the real pools may overlap more.
Brand mentions overlap more than links. When a brand was named in an AI Overview, there was a 61% chance AI Mode named it too, usually alongside more competitors. If you want the mechanics of how overviews pick their sources, see how Google AI Overviews choose which sources to cite.
How to rank in Google AI Mode
You rank in AI Mode with the same eligibility as Google Search and a content set built for the multi-part questions it is designed to answer. Google says there are no additional requirements or special optimizations for AI Mode beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet. These are the steps we would take for a SaaS product, in order.
Seven steps to appear in Google AI Mode
- Confirm eligibilityCheck that key pages are indexed, carry no nosnippet or restrictive max-snippet rules, and that the domain is included in Search Console's Search generative AI control, because an excluded site gets no AI Mode links.
- Build pages for comparisonsAI Mode is aimed at complex comparisons, so publish honest comparison, alternatives and “X for Y” use-case pages that state who each option suits. Our piece on alternatives and comparison pages covers how to do this without misrepresenting competitors.
- Answer the second and third questionSearch Console treats each follow-up in AI Mode as a new query. List the follow-ups buyers ask after the first answer, such as setup time, data handling and limits, and answer each in its own section.
- Write reference-grade pagesWith Wikipedia appearing in 28.9% of AI Mode citations against 18.1% for AI Overviews, plain definitional pages, glossaries and docs that explain a concept neutrally are closer to what AI Mode cites than sales copy.
- Put facts in tables and textPricing, plan limits, integrations and supported languages belong in visible HTML tables, not images or gated PDFs. Google's guidance is to keep important content in text and structured data matched to it.
- Get named where AI Mode looksEarn mentions in reviews, roundups, Q&A sites and communities your buyers use. Google warns that seeking inauthentic mentions is not as helpful as it might seem, so answer real questions rather than seeding them.
- Track AI Mode separatelySearch Console's generative AI performance report includes AI Mode impressions, but its help page documents no filter that separates AI Mode from AI Overviews, so add a fixed set of manual checks for your key prompts.
What does AI Mode mean for SaaS content?
It shifts value from the click to the mention. Semrush's July 2025 clickstream study of almost 69 million US desktop Google sessions found that only 6% to 8% of AI Mode sessions led to a visit to an external site. If a buyer builds a shortlist inside AI Mode, being on that shortlist is the outcome, and the visit may come later as a branded search or a direct visit.
Shortlist queries are where AI Mode differs most. Ahrefs' example was “cloud storage alternatives”: the AI Overview mentioned seven brands once each, near the end, while the AI Mode answer contained 23 brand mentions and named a brand in its very first sentence. For a SaaS company, alternatives, best-for and comparison queries are exactly where AI Mode will name competitors, so absence there costs more than absence from a definitional overview.
Should a startup optimize for AI Mode separately from AI Overviews?
Not as a separate program, but with separate tracking and a different emphasis. The foundation is shared: Google's generative AI optimization guide says both features are rooted in its core ranking and quality systems, so the pages that rank in Google and Bing are your raw material for both. The emphasis differs: AI Overviews reward a crisp answer to a common question, and AI Mode rewards depth on comparisons, constraints and follow-ups.
Be honest about the trade-off too. If your buyers rarely research in Google, an AI Mode push is the wrong first move, and a startup with no comparison or use-case pages should build those before anything AI Mode specific. Google's AI surfaces are also two of seven places buyers ask: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode and Copilot each cite differently.

Frequently asked questions
Is Google AI Mode the same as Gemini?
No. AI Mode is a search mode inside Google Search that runs on a custom version of Google's Gemini models and grounds its answers in Google's search index, Knowledge Graph and shopping data. The Gemini app is a separate assistant with its own interface and behaviour. Pages need to be indexed in Google Search and eligible for a snippet to be linked in AI Mode, the same rule as for AI Overviews.
Does AI Mode traffic show up in Search Console?
Yes. Clicks from AI Mode links count as clicks in the Performance report, and position follows the normal results page method. A follow-up question is treated as a new query, with its own impressions and clicks. Since August 31, 2026, the generative AI performance report has shown AI Overviews and AI Mode impressions for all sites, though it reports impressions only and its help page documents no separate AI Mode filter.
If I am cited in AI Overviews, will I be cited in AI Mode too?
Not reliably. Ahrefs found the two cited the same URLs only 13.7% of the time for the same query. Brand mentions carried over more often: when an AI Overview named a brand, AI Mode named it 61% of the time, usually with more competitors beside it. Treat the two as related but separate, and check your key queries in both rather than assuming one covers the other.
Does AI Mode send any traffic to websites?
Some, but little per session. Semrush's clickstream study of almost 69 million US desktop sessions between May and July 2025 found 6% to 8% of AI Mode sessions led to a visit to an external site. Google says clicks from results pages with AI Overviews tend to be higher quality, and has not published a separate figure for AI Mode. For SaaS, the bigger effect is usually being named on a shortlist, which shows up later as branded searches and direct visits.
