How to Fix What ChatGPT Says About Your Company
Quick answer
To fix what ChatGPT says about your company, first ask it about you with web search on and off to see whether the error comes from a cited page or from training data. Correct the cited pages, starting with your own site and profiles, then ask third parties to update theirs, and get everything recrawled. Search-based answers can change within days to weeks; training-data answers change only with a newer model.

Key takeaways
- ChatGPT answers either from training data or from pages it retrieves through search, so trace each error to one of the two first.
- Fix your own site and profiles from one fact sheet, then ask the authors of cited third-party pages to correct theirs.
- Allow OAI-SearchBot and get corrected pages recrawled, since OpenAI says robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to register.
- Old pages keep getting cited, with a median cited page age of about 500 days in Ahrefs' study, so correcting them beats only publishing new ones.
- There is no OpenAI process for companies to edit answers, and training-data errors last until a newer model ships.
There is no form for editing ChatGPT's answers, so the work is finding where each wrong fact comes from and correcting it there. If ChatGPT describes your AI startup with an old product, the wrong pricing, the wrong category or a different company's details, this guide covers how to trace each error, the order to fix things in, and how long each kind of correction takes to show up.
Why does ChatGPT describe your company wrong?
Because it answers from two places, and either can be out of date. Without web search, it answers from what the model learned in training. With web search, it answers from pages it retrieves at that moment. A wrong answer means the training data was stale, the retrieved pages are wrong, or there was too little information and the model filled the gap.
OpenAI says as much in its help article Does ChatGPT tell the truth: models are trained on data up to a certain point and do not know about later events unless tools are used, they can produce incorrect outputs with high confidence, and they may be unable to read a website because of technical issues, paywalls or robots.txt preferences. The same page says web search is enabled for all models by default, and that answers without search are based on what the model learned in training.
| What ChatGPT gets wrong | Likely source | Where to look |
|---|---|---|
| Describes your product before a pivot | Training data, or old profiles and articles | Crunchbase, LinkedIn, old press, launch posts |
| Wrong pricing or plans | Old review profiles, list articles, cached pricing pages | G2, Capterra, best-of lists |
| Wrong category or wrong competitors | Vague homepage copy, or a profile filed in the wrong category | Your homepage and review profiles |
| Mixes you up with a similarly named company | Name collision with no disambiguating facts | Search results for your bare brand name |
| Says it has no information | Pages blocked from OAI-SearchBot, or too few third-party mentions | Your robots.txt and firewall, your mention count |
| Invents a founder, funding round or feature | No reliable source, so the model fills the gap | Whether your about page states those facts |
How do you find the source of a wrong answer?
Ask the same questions with search on and with search off, and open every cited source. If the error appears with citations, the cited page is your fix. If it appears only without search, it comes from training data, which takes longer to change.
- Write the questions buyers ask about you. "What is [company]?", "How much does [company] cost?", "What are alternatives to [company]?" and "Is [company] good for [use case]?"
- Run them with web search on. Use a fresh chat with memory off. Open the Sources panel and every citation, and note which page states the wrong fact.
- Run them again without search. If the error persists without search but disappears with it, the model's training data is the source.
- Search your brand on Google and Bing. Look for similarly named companies, outdated profiles and old articles ranking for your name. ChatGPT search and Copilot draw on Bing's index, so check Bing especially.
- Check that OpenAI's search crawler can reach you. Confirm robots.txt and any firewall or bot protection allow OAI-SearchBot.
- Log every wrong source in one sheet. URL, what it says, what it should say, who controls it and the date you asked for a fix.
Turn memory off for testing because OpenAI's help page on ChatGPT search says saved memories may be used when ChatGPT rewrites a search query, which can skew your results. The same page says search results and citations can be incomplete, outdated or incorrect, which is exactly what you are hunting for.

Fix the pages you control first, then the profiles you can edit, then the third-party pages you have to ask about. Then make sure the fixed pages get recrawled.
Fixing what ChatGPT says about your company
- Write one fact sheetList the facts you want repeated: legal and brand name, one-sentence description, category, founding year, founders, headquarters, pricing model, main integrations and what you do not do. Every later step copies from this sheet, so engines see the same facts in the same words. Our guide to describing an AI product so Google and AI engines understand it covers the description line.
- Fix your own sitePut the facts on pages a crawler can read: the homepage, an about page, a pricing page and the docs intro. If you pivoted, say so in plain words on the about page, with the date, so old descriptions read as history rather than as current fact. Add Organization structured data that repeats the same description and lists your official profiles under sameAs. Google says this markup helps it tell your organization apart from others, which matters most when another company shares your name.
- Fix the profiles you controlUpdate LinkedIn, Crunchbase, G2, Capterra, Product Hunt, app marketplaces and your founders' bios from the fact sheet. Review profiles carry pricing and category, which engines quote for comparison questions; how review sites like G2 influence AI recommendations explains why those pages matter.
- Ask third parties to correct their pagesEmail the authors of cited articles and lists with the exact wrong sentence, the correct fact and a link to your page that proves it. Keep it short and factual. For Wikipedia, its conflict of interest guideline strongly discourages editing articles about your own company and asks people with a conflict to disclose it and propose changes on the article's talk page instead.
- Get the corrected pages recrawledA fixed page helps only once search systems have read it. Submit updated URLs through Bing Webmaster Tools or IndexNow, which says that without it search engines can take days to weeks to discover changed content. Use the URL Inspection tool in Google Search Console for Google. If your robots.txt blocked OAI-SearchBot, fix it; OpenAI's crawler documentation says it can take about 24 hours for its systems to adjust to a robots.txt change, and its publishers FAQ says a site must not block OAI-SearchBot for its content to appear in summaries and snippets in ChatGPT.
- Publish fresh pages that state the factsA changelog entry, a press release about the new pricing, a customer story using the new positioning. New pages give ChatGPT's search more current sources that agree with each other, which is how an old wrong article gets outvoted rather than erased.
That finding is why step 4 matters. An established article with the wrong facts can keep being cited for a long time after you publish the right ones, so asking its author for a correction often does more than publishing something new.
How long do corrections take to show up in ChatGPT?
Answers that come from web search can change within days to weeks of the corrected pages being recrawled. Answers that come from training data change only when OpenAI ships a model trained on later data, which can be many months away.
| Where the error comes from | What changes it | Typical wait |
|---|---|---|
| A cited page on your site | Fixing the page, then a recrawl | Days to weeks, depending on recrawl |
| A blocked crawler | Allowing OAI-SearchBot | About 24 hours for OpenAI's systems to adjust, then a crawl |
| A cited third-party page | The publisher updating it | Depends on the publisher |
| Training data | A newer model with a later knowledge cutoff | Until the next model release |
For scale, OpenAI's models page listed knowledge cutoffs of April 30, 2026 for GPT-6 Astra, its flagship, and GPT-6.1 Sol when we checked in October 2026. Anything published after a model's cutoff is absent from what that model learned, though search can still find it. That is why getting search-time answers right comes first: they are the part you can change this month.
Do the same fixes work for other AI engines?
Mostly, because the other engines read many of the same sources. Correcting your site, profiles and third-party pages improves the material Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode and Copilot retrieve too. A few engine-specific steps help.
- Perplexity searches the web in real time for each answer, according to Perplexity's help center, so corrections can appear there as soon as the corrected pages are recrawled; we have not seen reliable data comparing how fast each engine picks them up.
- For Google, a verified representative can suggest edits to a knowledge panel; Google's knowledge panel help says it reviews feedback from verified users within a few days.
- Anthropic's crawler documentation says blocking Claude-SearchBot may reduce your visibility in Claude's search results, so check it alongside OAI-SearchBot.
Crawler access is often where "it has no information about us" starts. The full list of AI crawlers and what each does is in should you allow GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot to crawl your site, and rendering problems that hide content from crawlers are covered in technical SEO issues that stop AI startup websites from being crawled.
What can you not fix directly?
You cannot edit ChatGPT's answers, and we have not found any OpenAI documentation describing a process for companies to correct facts about themselves. Rating a response is feedback on that one answer, and we have not seen OpenAI say it corrects facts about a business. OpenAI's personal data removal process is narrower than founders hope: under privacy laws such as the GDPR, an individual, such as a founder, can ask that inaccurate personal information stop appearing in responses, assessed case by case. It covers people, not company descriptions.
You also cannot fix opinions. If reviewers and threads say your onboarding is confusing, ChatGPT will repeat it until those sources change, and the only real fix is the product. That kind of reputation work, together with the factual clean-up, is what an AI brand entity optimization program covers. Be wary of anyone who promises to change what ChatGPT says on a fixed timeline; the training-data part of the answer is not in anyone's control outside OpenAI.
Frequently asked questions
Can I contact OpenAI to correct what ChatGPT says about my company?
We have not found any OpenAI documentation describing a process for companies to correct facts about themselves in ChatGPT. Rating a response is feedback on that one answer, and OpenAI's personal data removal process covers individuals, not businesses. The practical route is to fix the sources ChatGPT reads: your site, your profiles and the third-party pages it cites, then get those pages recrawled.
Why does ChatGPT still describe our old product after a pivot?
Either the model learned your old description in training, or its search keeps retrieving older pages that still describe it. Ahrefs found the median page ChatGPT cites is about 500 days old, so launch articles and old profiles keep surfacing. Update your about page with the pivot and its date, fix every profile you control, ask authors of cited articles to update them, and publish new pages that state the current product.
How long does it take for ChatGPT to show corrected information?
For answers that use web search, changes can appear within days to weeks of the corrected pages being recrawled, and OpenAI says robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to register. For answers based on training data, nothing changes until OpenAI releases a model trained on later data. Test both by asking the same questions with search on and off after each round of fixes.
What if ChatGPT confuses my company with another one?
Give engines facts that separate you. State your full legal name, domain, founding year, headquarters and category on your homepage and about page, add Organization structured data with sameAs links to your official profiles, and keep the same details on LinkedIn, Crunchbase and review sites. Google says Organization markup helps disambiguate organizations in search, and the same consistent facts help ChatGPT's search find the right company.
