Do Backlinks Still Matter for AI Search Visibility
Quick answer
Do backlinks still matter for AI search visibility? Yes, but mostly indirectly. Links help Google and Bing find and rank your pages, and AI engines retrieve sources from search results. Whether an engine names your brand tracks more closely with mentions: Ahrefs found branded web mentions correlated 0.664 with Google AI Overviews visibility, against 0.218 for backlinks. Earn both, and favour links that are also mentions.

Key takeaways
- Backlinks help AI visibility through retrieval, because they help pages get crawled and rank in the indexes AI engines search.
- In Ahrefs' 75,000-brand study, branded web mentions correlated three times more strongly with Google AI Overviews visibility than backlink counts.
- SE Ranking found referring domains were the strongest predictor of ChatGPT URL citations, but the effect sits mostly above 32,000 referring domains.
- The placements that count are links and mentions at once, on pages engines already retrieve, such as ranking best-of lists.
- Paid and bulk links risk your Google and Bing rankings, which is where AI retrieval starts.
Backlinks still matter for AI search visibility, but not in the way most link reports assume. They help Google and Bing discover and rank your pages, and every AI engine that searches the web pulls its sources from an index like those. Whether an engine names your product, though, correlates far more with how often the web talks about you, linked or not. If you run growth at a seed to Series B AI startup and you're deciding whether to keep paying for links, this is the evidence and the order we'd spend in.
Do backlinks still matter for AI search visibility?
Yes, as one input among several. A backlink does two jobs AI engines depend on: it helps crawlers find your pages, and it feeds the ranking systems that decide which pages come back when an engine runs a search. A brand mention does a third job a link alone cannot, which is putting your name into the sentences engines read about your category. The studies below suggest the third job is the one most tied to being recommended.
Google is explicit about the first two. Its guide to ranking systems says Google uses systems that understand "how pages link to each other" to work out what pages are about, and that PageRank "continues to be part of our core ranking systems". Google's AI features documentation adds that a page only qualifies as a supporting link in Google AI Overviews or Google AI Mode if it is indexed and eligible to show in Google Search with a snippet. Links still help a new domain clear both bars.
How does a backlink reach an AI answer?
A backlink reaches an AI answer through retrieval. Engines that search the web send queries to an index, read the pages that come back, and quote the passages that answer the question. Links raise the odds that your page is in that index and ranks for those queries. Each engine searches a different index, as the crawler pages from OpenAI, Perplexity and Anthropic and Google's Gemini grounding documentation show.
| Engine | Where it retrieves sources | What links do there |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | OpenAI's search features, crawled by OAI-SearchBot. Peec AI's September 2026 research maps several providers behind it, including OpenAI's own index, scraped Google results and, mainly in Deep Research, Bing | Help your pages rank in the indexes ChatGPT queries |
| Perplexity | Its own index, built by PerplexityBot | Help discovery. Perplexity does not publish ranking signals |
| Claude | Web search with cited sources. Claude-SearchBot indexes pages for search | Anthropic does not publish ranking signals |
| Gemini | Google Search grounding, where the model writes one or more search queries and answers from the results | Feed the Google rankings those queries return |
| Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode | Google's index, using query fan-out across related searches | PageRank and link analysis shape which pages each fan-out search returns |
| Copilot | Bing's index | Bing rankings apply, and Bing Webmaster Tools reports citations |
Copilot draws on Bing's index, and Bing's AI Performance report, launched in February 2026, shows how often your pages are cited across Microsoft Copilot, AI summaries in Bing and select partner integrations. ChatGPT is less tidy. Peec AI's research on ChatGPT search providers found it stitches together OpenAI's own index, Google results gathered through third parties, Microsoft's grounding service and, mainly in Deep Research, Bing, with no published weighting. The practical reading is the same either way: pages that rank well on Google and Bing are the pages these engines can find.

For brand visibility, the largest studies point the same way: mentions beat links. Ahrefs measured how often 75,000 brands appeared in Google AI Overviews and compared that with each brand's search and link metrics. Branded web mentions came out on top. Backlink count sat near the bottom, below referring domains and Domain Rating.
Ahrefs ran the analysis again in December 2025 across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode. Branded web mentions correlated between 0.66 and 0.71, YouTube mentions came out highest at about 0.737, and the authors again found "very weak correlations" between link metrics and brand mentions on all three. ChatGPT showed the weakest tie to classic authority metrics of the three, with Domain Rating at 0.266.
The study that points the other way
One large study favours links for a different outcome. SE Ranking's November 2025 analysis of 129,000 domains and 216,524 pages found referring domains were the strongest predictor of how often ChatGPT cited a site's URLs. The effect was steep at the top and flat at the bottom.
Why do the backlink studies disagree?
They measure different things. Ahrefs counted how often a brand is named in the answer text. SE Ranking counted how often a site's URLs are cited as sources. A brand gets named because many pages describe it. A URL gets cited because it ranks in the searches the engine runs, and ranking is where links still carry weight.
| Outcome you care about | Signal that correlates most | Study |
|---|---|---|
| Your brand named in the answer | Branded web mentions and YouTube mentions | Ahrefs, May and December 2025 |
| Your URL cited as a source | Referring domains, domain trust and organic traffic | SE Ranking, November 2025 |
| Neither | Backlink count on its own | Weak in both |
Both are correlations, and both studies say so. Sites with hundreds of thousands of referring domains are also big brands with heavy traffic, so links may be a marker of size rather than the cause. For a startup the SE Ranking bands that matter are the lowest ones, and below 2,500 referring domains the averages barely move. Adding a few hundred generic links is unlikely to change how often ChatGPT cites you.
Which link and mention types correlate with AI citations?
The types that show up in the data are links and mentions at once, on pages engines already retrieve. A listicle that ranks for "best AI video editors" and names your product with a link does more than a footer link on an unrelated blog, because it is the page the engine reads when it answers that question. Ahrefs' December 2025 study of best lists found such lists made up 43.8% of the pages ChatGPT cited across 750 prompts.
| Type | Evidence | Priority |
|---|---|---|
| Inclusion in ranking best-of lists | Ahrefs' December 2025 study of 750 prompts found best lists made up 43.8% of the pages ChatGPT cited | High |
| Links whose anchor text is your brand name | Branded anchors correlated 0.527 with Google AI Overviews visibility and 0.628 with Google AI Mode visibility (Ahrefs) | High |
| YouTube mentions | About 0.737, the strongest factor in Ahrefs' December 2025 study | Medium to high, depending on category |
| Review platform profiles | SE Ranking found domains on review platforms such as G2, Capterra and Trustpilot had 3x higher chances of being cited by ChatGPT | Medium |
| Reddit and Quora presence | SE Ranking found domains with millions of brand mentions on Reddit and Quora had roughly 4x the chance of a ChatGPT citation of those with minimal activity | Medium |
| Paid or bulk links on unrelated sites | Backlink count correlated 0.218 (Ahrefs), and Google classes paid links for ranking as link spam | Avoid |
What should an AI startup prioritise, links or mentions?
Prioritise placements that give you both, aimed at the pages and prompts that decide your category. Then fill gaps with links to the pages you want cited and mentions where buyers already talk. This is the order we'd follow with a new domain.
A link and mention order for AI visibility
- Fix crawler access and indexing firstCheck that Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot can reach your key pages. No amount of authority helps a page an engine cannot retrieve.
- Get into the lists that already rank for your categoryRun your category prompts, collect the best-of pages the engines cite, and pitch their editors with something worth adding. Our guide to getting into the best-of lists AI engines cite covers the outreach.
- Earn branded links, not keyword anchorsBranded anchors correlate with AI visibility and read as natural to Google and Bing. Exact-match keyword anchors do neither.
- Show up where buyers compare toolsReddit threads, YouTube reviews and review platforms put your name in the text engines retrieve. See why AI engines cite Reddit before you post anything.
- Point editorial links at the pages you want citedComparison, use-case and pricing pages answer buying questions, so links to them help them rank for the related searches engines run. That gap is explained in why ranking first on Google does not guarantee AI citations.
- Measure mentions and citations separatelyTrack how often your brand is named, which URLs are cited and how many referring domains you have, against a baseline set before the work starts.
A SaaS link building programme built for AI visibility should report those three numbers, not referring domains alone. If you're weighing partners that cover links and AI visibility together, our comparison of AI SEO agencies sets out how they differ.
When is link building a waste of money for AI visibility?
When it buys volume. Google's spam policies define link spam as creating links "primarily for the purpose of manipulating search rankings" and list paid links, excessive link exchanges and low-quality directory links as examples. Those links put your Google and Bing rankings at risk, which is where AI retrieval starts, and the Ahrefs data gives no reason to expect them to lift brand mentions.
Manufactured mentions fail the same way. Google's guide to generative AI features says that seeking inauthentic mentions across the web "isn't as helpful as it might seem". Self-written guest posts and forum signatures are the mention version of buying links. And if your pages are not answering the questions buyers ask, links will help an engine find a page it then declines to quote. Our explainer on how AI search engines decide which sources to cite covers that second half.
Frequently asked questions
Are unlinked brand mentions worth chasing for AI search?
Yes, when they appear on pages AI engines retrieve. Ahrefs' May 2025 study of 75,000 brands found branded web mentions, linked or not, correlated 0.664 with Google AI Overviews visibility, the strongest factor it measured. An unlinked mention passes no PageRank, so it will not help your Google rankings directly, but it adds your name to the text engines read about your category.
How many backlinks does a startup need to get cited by ChatGPT?
There is no published threshold for small sites. SE Ranking's November 2025 study found ChatGPT citations rose sharply above about 32,000 referring domains, but sites with up to 2,500 referring domains all averaged 1.6 to 1.8 citations. For a startup, the pages you publish and where you are mentioned will matter more than the next few hundred links.
Do nofollow links help with AI search visibility?
We have not seen reliable data that separates nofollow from followed links in AI citation studies. Google asks for nofollow or sponsored on paid links so they pass no ranking credit. A nofollow link on a page that ranks for your category prompt still puts your name on a page engines read, which is often worth more than a followed link on an unrelated site.
Should an AI startup stop link building and focus on mentions?
No. Links still help Google and Bing find and rank your pages, and AI engines retrieve from search results. Stop buying volume and shift budget to placements that are links and mentions at once, such as best-of lists, editorial coverage and review platforms, plus community presence. Measure brand mentions in answers and cited URLs separately so you can see which one moves.
