How Often ChatGPT Recommendations Match Google’s Top Results

Quick answer

How often ChatGPT recommendations match Google's top results depends on what you compare. Page by page, overlap is low: Ahrefs found 8% of ChatGPT's citations ranked in Google's top 10 for long-tail prompts and 10% for head terms. Brand by brand it is higher: Chatoptic found brands on Google's first page appeared in ChatGPT answers 62% of the time. Positions barely correlate, and Bing matches ChatGPT's citations at least as often as Google.

Key takeaways

  • Page-level overlap is low: across Ahrefs' studies, between 6.1% and 10% of ChatGPT's cited or retrieved URLs ranked in Google's top 10.
  • Brand-level overlap is moderate: brands on Google's first page were named in ChatGPT answers 62% of the time in Chatoptic's study.
  • Google positions barely predict ChatGPT positions; Chatoptic measured a correlation of 0.034.
  • ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode disagreed on brands for 61.9% of queries, and most on "best" queries, in BrightEdge's data.
  • No published overlap study covers AI tool categories, so measure your own prompts on ChatGPT, Google and Bing.

How often ChatGPT recommendations match Google's top results depends on what you count. Count pages and the match is rare: in the large Ahrefs studies, a tenth or less of the URLs ChatGPT cites rank in Google's top 10 for the same query. Count brands and, in the one study that measured it, the match was 62%. If you lead growth at a seed to Series B AI startup and someone tells you that ranking on Google and Bing will carry you into ChatGPT's shortlists, this is what the overlap studies actually found, how they measured it, and what it means for where you put the next quarter's effort.

How often ChatGPT recommendations match Google's top results, study by study

At the page level, between 6.1% and 10% of ChatGPT's cited or retrieved URLs sit in Google's top 10, across the Ahrefs studies. At the domain level the figure roughly triples, and at the brand level, the one that decides whether a buyer hears your name, one study found about 62% agreement. The table lists each study with its method, because the method explains most of the spread. Semrush's July 2025 study, for example, found pages cited by ChatGPT search ranked in positions 21 or lower for related queries almost 90% of the time.

Read the Chatoptic figure carefully. Being on page one gives a brand a fair chance of being named, but its position on Google tells you almost nothing about where ChatGPT will place it. The study's categories were car insurance, credit cards, hotel booking, online courses and web hosting, so it is evidence about large consumer brands, not AI tools.

Why is brand overlap so much higher than page overlap?

Because ChatGPT can name a brand without citing the page that ranks for it. A brand appears on dozens of pages, so ChatGPT can pick a different page from the same site, a third-party list or nothing at all and still recommend the same product Google surfaces.

The studies show each layer. Ahrefs' September 2025 head-term study found ChatGPT matched Google's top 10 by domain 31.8% of the time but by exact URL only 10%, so it often picks a different page on the same site. BrightEdge's August 2025 analysis found ChatGPT mentioned 2.37 brands per query on average but gave only 0.73 citations, so most of its recommendations carry no link. For a founder, that means the page-level studies understate how often a strong Google presence turns into a ChatGPT mention, and overstate how often it turns into a ChatGPT link.

Does ChatGPT match Bing more closely than Google?

The evidence is mixed. Seer Interactive found 87% or more of ChatGPT's citations matched Bing's top results against 56% for Google, while Ahrefs found ChatGPT's citations in Bing's top 10 and Google's top 10 at almost identical rates, 8.1% and 8.0%.

The methods explain the gap. Seer used about 100 queries, searched the exact question, counted a match anywhere in the results and noted its queries leaned on words like "top" and "best". Ahrefs used 15,000 long-tail prompts and counted only the top 10. OpenAI's search help page says ChatGPT rewrites a question into targeted queries for its search partners and links Microsoft's privacy statement, and Ahrefs' fan-out study found it sends 1.78 searches per prompt on average and concluded it likely blends several sources and applies its own re-ranking. The working conclusion for a startup: rank on Google and Bing both, and treat neither as a stand-in for ChatGPT. Whether submitting to Bing alone moves the needle is covered in Bing Webmaster Tools and ChatGPT.

How often do ChatGPT and Google's AI answers recommend the same brands?

Usually not, on BrightEdge's numbers. Across tens of thousands of identical prompts, ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode gave different brand recommendations for 61.9% of queries, and only 17% of queries got the same brands on all three.

Agreement depends heavily on the type of question. BrightEdge found 80% same-brand agreement on comparison queries, 62% on buying queries, 38% on "where" queries and 23% on "best" queries. That last row matters most for AI tools, because "best AI tool for [job]" is the shortlist prompt buyers use, and it is where the engines disagree most. B2B tech queries saw 61.7% disagreement. The engines also differ in how many names they give: 2.37 brands per query for ChatGPT, 6.02 for Google AI Overviews and 1.59 for Google AI Mode.

Why do ChatGPT and Google pick different sources and brands?

They search differently, weigh brand signals differently and draw on different memories. Each reason below comes from a published measurement, and the page-level mechanics are covered in depth in why ranking first on Google does not guarantee AI citations.

  • ChatGPT does not simply reuse Google's results. Even on the exact queries ChatGPT sent to search, only 16.61% of the URLs it got back appeared anywhere in Google's results in Ahrefs' fan-out study, and Ahrefs concluded it likely blends several sources and applies its own re-ranking.
  • Google leans harder on brand popularity. In Ahrefs' July 2025 comparison of the top 50 sites in each system, branded web mentions correlated with visibility at 0.15 in ChatGPT, 0.30 in Perplexity and 0.65 in Google AI Overviews. The sample is small, but the direction is clear.
  • ChatGPT cites pages Google barely ranks. Ahrefs' October 2025 study of ChatGPT's 1,000 most-cited pages found 28% had zero organic keywords. Ahrefs suggested a mix of fresh pages not yet ranked, niche topics with little search demand and different quality signals.
  • ChatGPT also answers from memory. In the Chatoptic study, brand positions correlated with Google's at 0.022 with browsing off and 0.034 with it on, which Chatoptic called essentially the same, and it concluded visibility was driven primarily by the model's internal knowledge.

Which page types show up in both ChatGPT and Google?

Comparison roundups are the clearest overlap for software, and vendor landing pages are common on the ChatGPT side. They are pages built for the commercial queries where both systems look for a shortlist, and the evidence for each is below.

Seer found most of ChatGPT's cited sources were affiliate, news and aggregator sites, and tied that to its queries using words like "top" and "best". In Ahrefs' December 2025 best-lists study, 169 of 250 Google results pages for "best X software" searches (67.6%) featured a list in which the publisher ranked itself first, and the same kind of list appeared in more than a third of ChatGPT's software answers when its publisher was recommended. Ahrefs' head-term study suggests a partial reason: commercial, transactional and navigational queries have a finite set of relevant brands, so search engines and AI assistants are more likely to converge on the same sources than they are for open-ended informational questions.

What does the overlap gap mean for an AI startup?

It means a Google ranking report cannot tell you whether ChatGPT recommends you, and ChatGPT visibility cannot be inferred from your SEO dashboard. Measure them separately and plan work that serves both. The same applies across Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode and Copilot, which each overlap with organic results to a different degree.

Acting on the gap between ChatGPT and Google

  1. Track brand mentions, not just positionsBrand-level agreement is where the overlap is meaningful, so record whether ChatGPT names you for each buyer prompt, as described in share of voice in AI search.
  2. Keep ranking on Google and BingBrands on Google's first page were named in 62% of ChatGPT answers in Chatoptic's data, so organic visibility still raises the odds even though it does not set your position.
  3. Prioritize the shortlist prompts"Best" queries showed the least agreement in BrightEdge's data, so check them on every engine instead of assuming one result covers the rest.
  4. Build pages for commercial queriesUse-case pages, comparison pages and inclusion in third-party roundups target the commercial queries where Ahrefs suggests ChatGPT and Google are more likely to share sources.
  5. Report AI traffic on its own lineClicks from ChatGPT behave differently from organic clicks, as whether ChatGPT and Perplexity traffic converts better than Google explains.

Running both measurements across engines and turning them into one plan is what AI visibility work covers. How SEO and GEO divide that work is compared in GEO vs SEO.

What the overlap studies do not tell you

We have not seen a published overlap study limited to AI tool categories. Chatoptic tested consumer brands, BrightEdge spread its prompts across industries from healthcare to e-commerce, and the Ahrefs and Semrush samples mix topics. Most of the data was collected in 2025, before later ChatGPT model changes, and every study counts a match differently, so the figures should not be averaged.

For a founder, the honest summary is a range, not a number: low overlap for pages, moderate overlap for brands, and almost no relationship between positions. The only way to know your own figure is to run your buyers' prompts in ChatGPT, search the same queries on Google and Bing, and compare which brands appear in each.

Frequently asked questions

Do ChatGPT citations come from Google's top 10?

Rarely. Ahrefs found 8.0% of ChatGPT's in-text citations ranked in Google's top 10 for 15,000 long-tail prompts in August 2025, and 10% for 3,311 head terms in September 2025. Matching by domain instead of URL raised the head-term figure to 31.8%. ChatGPT often cites a different page from a site that ranks, or a page that does not rank for the original query at all.

If my AI tool ranks on Google's first page, will ChatGPT recommend it?

It helps, but it does not guarantee it. Chatoptic's September 2025 study found brands on Google's first page appeared in ChatGPT answers 62% of the time, so roughly four times in ten they were left out. Where both named a brand, positions barely correlated. Ranking raises your odds of being named, while third-party lists, reviews and mentions decide much of the rest.

Does ChatGPT use Bing or Google results?

OpenAI says ChatGPT rewrites questions into queries for search partners and links Microsoft's privacy statement. Seer Interactive found 87% or more of ChatGPT's citations matched Bing's results against 56% for Google, while Ahrefs found nearly equal top 10 overlap with each. Ahrefs' fan-out data suggests ChatGPT blends several sources and re-ranks them, so it pays to rank on both Google and Bing.

Do ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews recommend the same brands?

Often not. BrightEdge's August 2025 analysis of tens of thousands of identical prompts found ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode gave different brand recommendations for 61.9% of queries. Agreement was 80% on comparison queries but only 23% on "best" queries. Google AI Overviews named 6.02 brands per query against 2.37 for ChatGPT, so it leaves more room for newer products.

Is there an overlap study specific to AI tools?

We have not seen one. The published studies cover consumer categories such as insurance and web hosting, mixed industries, or digital marketing topics, and most of their data dates from 2025. To find your own overlap, run your buyers' shortlist prompts in ChatGPT, search the same phrases on Google and Bing, and record which brands appear in each over several weeks.
